<image:caption>I’ve been in the mental health field for over 14 years. My journey has taken me all over Minnesota. I’ve worked in the community, in a hospital, and for the Department of Corrections. A true Gryffindor at heart, I’m on to the next big adventure, which is Oak Haven! I have been providing animal-assisted therapy at Farmaste since May 2022 and it has been such a joy. In August 2021 I completed a certificate in Animal and Human Health from the University of Denver and can’t wait to do therapy work alongside animal assistants. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and kiddos, hanging with friends, listening to true crime podcasts, and volunteering at Farmaste Animal Sanctuary.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Codependency - Codependency</image:title>
<image:caption>Codependency is a relationship dynamic where one person in the relationship is extremely reliant on the other, to the point where one is absorbed by the need of the other’s approval. Codependency can be found in a variety of relationships, including partnerships, parent-child, and friendships. If you are codependent, decisions can seem impossible for you to make on your own. You need the other person to make decisions for you because you don’t trust your own decision-making. You hate who you are and seek validation from others, most significantly the person you are codependent on. When you don’t get that validation and attention, the world falls apart. You feel lost, like a boat without a rudder. Because of this, you avoid conflict at any cost. You are so terrified of losing this person you behave in ways that betray yourself to keep them happy and in your life. This behavior may include enabling the other’s poor behaviors, such as allowing them to treat you poorly or providing them with money they haven’t earned. You know this person isn’t treating you the way they should treat a loved one, but the fear of losing this person overrides everything else. Just thinking about life without them is so painful that it triggers anxiety. You feel your heart start to beat fast, breathing shallow, and you must push the thought out of your mind completely to avoid going into a full-on panic attack. It’s hard to remember who you are, what activities you enjoy, what values you hold dear, what your goals are, because your identity is consumed in the other person. You engage in activities this other person enjoys, you hold the values that the other person holds without question, and you are too busy doing what the other person wants to reflect on your goals and work towards your goals. Sometimes you are ok with this though because the other person is all that matters. You admire how others put boundaries in their life but feel like you can’t. Eventually, however, this way of relating to other people is exhausting. Resentment begins to grow, and your feelings of self-esteem and self-worth suffer. You get sick of others saying you are “too clingy”. You want a healthy relationship but are not sure how to get there. This is where I can help. Take a risk and reach out. You’ll be glad that you did.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Anger Management - Anger Management</image:title>
<image:caption>Anger is a powerful emotion and is often the catalyst for behaviors you later regret. You know the cycle all too well. Something pisses you off, the pressure gets to be too much, and you explode. You tell awful things to the people you love most, maybe become physically aggressive or destroy property. Once the dust settles, you realize the damage you’ve caused. You beg for forgiveness and promise it will never happen again. Things go alright for a while, but then life begins to wear you down again. Your stress levels climb, your kids don’t listen, you feel disrespected, and irritation evolves into feelings of rage. It feels like something suddenly snaps. Once again, you find yourself in a rage, starting the cycle all over again. You’ve tried to suppress all your feelings, numb your emotions, or just tell yourself to not be bothered. You soon find that these strategies don’t work. It starts to feel like things will never change. The very things you are doing to try to increase control of your situation makes you feel like you’ve lost all control. The people around you are starting to annoy you with their constant requests that you go to anger management. I’ve worked with people involved in the criminal justice system for almost a decade. I’ve worked with people who have lost everything because of actions they chose in response to anger. I don’t want that to happen to you. No matter what you’ve done, you can rebuild your life. Anger in itself is not the problem. It’s how you relate to it and act when you experience anger that is the problem… or the solution. Anger can be an indicator that something is interfering with your goals. Anger can even be a catalyst for good things, if handled appropriately. It’s important to note that anger management is not about never feeling anger or letting people walk all over you. It certainly doesn’t mean you have to allow people to disrespect you. In fact, when you are able to respond in a mindful and healthy matter to stress and obstacles, you will likely feel like others respect you more. If people are not treating you respectfully, I can teach you to set boundaries. Reach out today and start living the life you want!</image:caption>

<image:title>Animal Abuse - BARK Diversion Program for people at risk of harming or neglecting animals.</image:title>
<image:caption>Blending my experience working with people who have committed violent crimes and my love for animals, I pursued and completed training in the BARK (Behavior, Accountability, Responsibility, Knowledge) Diversion Program, created by Dr. Kenneth Shapiro and Dr. Kimberly Spanjol. This is a program for people who have perpetrated animal abuse or neglect and are at high risk of doing so again. This program can be used to treat people who have maliciously harmed, hoarded, neglected animals, and/or have recklessly disregarded the safety of animals. The program is 8-12 weeks long and can be delivered in group or individual settings. The curriculum covers a variety of topics, including a comprehensive assessment of risk factors, identifying and working through denial, empathy, perspective-taking, and anger management skills. Currently, services are only for adults, and programming for children will be coming soon. BARK programming is available on via telehealth only.</image:caption>

<image:title>Therapy at the Farm Sanctuary - What Does Animal-Assisted Therapy in Lindstrom, MN Look Like?</image:title>
<image:caption>Imagine your child in a therapy session. They are being asked to talk about some really tough stuff and they don’t know if they are up for the task. They start noticing their mind whirling and everything in their being wants to run away or shut down. Then they look over and see Blue the sheep. They reach over and pet her, really noticing her soft fur. Blue’s kind energy calms your child’s body and brings a smile to their face. After a few deep breaths, they feel supported and able to talk about the tough stuff. Maybe your child is feeling ashamed like they are a failure or a loser. They feel like they are not worthy of love because they don’t have a million friends, they don’t look a certain way, or their grades are less-than-ideal. I then ask if Blue the sheep is worthy of love. “Of course!” your kid says. I continue, “But she doesn’t have a million friends, look like the other sheep in her herd, or even go to school.” This leads us to a discussion about how people don’t need to earn love and how to start practicing self-compassion. <image:title>Animals Helping Humans. Humans Helping Animals. - Human-Animal Bond</image:title>
<image:caption>Have you been curious about what makes animal-assisted therapy so helpful? It’s effective because of the Human-Animal Bond (HAB). The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) defines the Human-Animal Bond as, “A mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and other animals.” The research is new, but promising. Here are a few interesting finds from the research. Both pets and therapy dogs are shown to be a buffer from stress, as measured by self-report, salivary cortisol, and systolic blood pressure. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has been shown to reduce stress in college students. Research suggests that pet ownership and interaction with an animal can significantly decrease anxiety in a variety of settings, such as an emergency room, dentist's office, and hospital. Both AAT and pet ownership have been shown to be beneficial in lifting mood and decreasing depression and Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms. Being in the presence of animals increases the human’s oxytocin, which is the hormone involved in bonding and attachment. For more information on the Animal-Human Bond please visit The Human-Animal Bond Research Institution at: https://habri.org/research/mental-health/conditions/ ***Research summaries were obtained from the above-mentioned site.</image:caption>
